Robotics
In this robotics course, your child will build, program, and bring robots to life using LEGO Mindstorms. This hands-on course is designed to teach engineering, coding, and problem-solving skills in a fun and engaging way.
Students will learn:
- Understand how robots work, explore the LEGO Mindstorms kit, and assemble their first robot.
- Learn to program their robot using block-based coding, controlling movements, sensors, and basic actions.
- Experiment with loops, decision-making, and sensor integration to tackle fun challenges like obstacle courses and line-following.
- Design, build, and program a custom robot to complete a specific task, showcasing creativity and technical skills.
LEGO Mindstorms combines the fun of building with the excitement of robotics, introducing kids to real-world technology concepts in an accessible way.
This course also provides an excellent foundation for RoboCup, a robotics competition later in the year. Students will gain valuable skills and experience to confidently participate and compete in events like Rescue, and OnStage challenges.
No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a love for building and creating!
By the end of the course, your child will have the skills and confidence to explore more advanced robotics and STEM projects.
Term 2 2025 Robotics – Strathmore Park
Scots College – 1 Monorgan Road, Strathmore Park
Thursdays: 1st May – 26th June (9 weeks)
Time: 3:30pm – 5:00pm. This class is aimed at students in Years 4 – 8, but also open to Year 9 & above. Students are expected to attend the full class (unless by special arrangements with the Matamoe Hub team).
RoboCup Junior Wellington 2025
During Term 2, students will have the opportunity to prepare for and compete in RoboCup Junior on the 29th of June. During course registrations, you will have the option to opt-in to RoboCup, in which case we will take care of forming teams in the class, and signing up for the actual competition.
Students attending this course do not have to participate in RoboCup, but will need to make a commitment either way when signing up for the course. Note that we will be offering preferential placement to students who are wanting to participate in RoboCup. You can find more details about RoboCup below.
Additional robotics skills
Students not participating in will be able to explore their creativity designing and building different styles of robots using Lego Mindstorms. They will learn to use different kinds of motors and sensors, and write code to give their robots particular functionality.
What is RoboCup Junior?
A hands-on robotics competition where kids learn problem-solving, teamwork, and coding in a fun, engaging environment. No experience needed—just curiosity and enthusiasm!
We are offering students to participate in the Rescue Challenge for RoboCup. Students will be required to:
- Design, build, and code a robot to navigate a maze by tracking a black line, then locate and move an object at the end of the course
- Come up with their own solution to this problem, with minimal direction from our tutors
- Keep a logbook with photos and details of their process leading up to the competition
- Participate in an informal interview with the RoboCup referees during the competition, to demonstrate their own understanding of their design and code.
During our Matamoe Hub classes leading up to the competition, we will teach students general concepts they may need, and provide as much support as we can. However, please not that since this is a competition, students must come up with their own designs and code.
Any questions about what is required of students, please reach out to us at [email protected].
